Welcome to the Rebel Version, where we let our appreciation for art run wild. In this version, love is out to get you.

Diana and Cupid (Pompeo Batoni): The goddess of hunting was commissioned by Sir Humphrey Morice (1723–1785), a wealthy merchant's son and director of the Bank of England. It hung next to Batoni's painting of Morice lounging in the Roman countryside with his hounds, gun, and dead game as a pendant, or companion piece. Collectively, the pieces juxtapose contemporary and historical Rome, much like the two adjacent canvases by Giovanni Paolo Panini. Diana's characteristic stance is inspired by a well-known antique statue of the sleeping Ariadne, princess of Crete. Batoni's tastefully elevated bow, which Diana withholds from Cupid, literally creates tension in an otherwise somber song.
